Canada Family Visa Requirements (2026)
"Family visa" in Canada covers two very different situations: (1) visiting family members already in Canada on a temporary Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), and (2) sponsoring family members for permanent residency. This guide covers both — what's needed to visit family in Canada, what's needed to apply for a Super Visa for parents, and the requirements for sponsoring a spouse or parents for PR.
Last updated: June 2026
Option 1 — Visiting Family in Canada (TRV)
If you want to visit a family member or friend in Canada for a holiday or a short stay, you apply for a standard Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) and declare your purpose as "visiting family." There is no separate family visit visa category.
Documents for a Family Visit Application
- Valid passport
- Completed IMM 5257 form (online)
- Digital photograph
- Biometrics (CAD $85)
- Bank statements — last 3–6 months
- Employment letter (proof you will return to your job)
- Proof of ties to home country (property, family, employment)
- Invitation letter from your Canadian host — signed, stating their relationship to you, address, duration of your stay, and confirmation they will accommodate you
- Copy of host's status in Canada — Canadian PR card, citizenship certificate, or study/work permit
- Proof of host's financial capacity (if they are supporting you financially)
Important Note for Family Visits
Visiting family in Canada is a common reason for visa refusal. Officers are vigilant about applicants who may plan to overstay — especially if the applicant lacks strong ties to their home country. To maximise approval chances:
- Show stable employment and a confirmed return-to-work date
- Provide a clear, specific visit duration with a round-trip booking
- Your host's letter should be specific — names, dates, and relationship stated clearly
- Include proof that your host has legal status in Canada (PR/citizen, not on a temporary permit expiring soon)
Option 2 — Super Visa (Parents and Grandparents)
The Super Visa is a special multi-entry visitor visa for the parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. It allows stays of up to 5 years per entry and is valid for up to 10 years — far longer than a regular TRV (which allows 6 months per entry).
Super Visa Requirements
- You are the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Invitation letter from your child/grandchild in Canada
- Proof of your child's Canadian status — Canadian passport, citizenship certificate, or PR card
- Canadian medical insurance — minimum CAD $100,000 coverage, valid for at least 1 year, from a Canadian insurance company
- Your child's proof of income meeting the minimum necessary income (MNI) for their family size
- Standard documents — passport, photograph, biometrics, bank statements
Super Visa Fee
CAD $185 (same as a regular TRV) + CAD $85 biometrics if required. The Canadian medical insurance is an additional cost — typically CAD $800–$2,000/year depending on age and coverage level.
Option 3 — Spousal/Partner Sponsorship for PR
A Canadian citizen or permanent resident can sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for Canadian permanent residency. This is a PR pathway, not a temporary visa.
Sponsorship Requirements (Sponsor)
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, 18+ years old
- Not be sponsored for PR yourself (recently arrived PRs on undertaking)
- Not receiving social assistance (with some exceptions)
- Sign an undertaking to financially support the sponsored person for 3 years after they become a PR
Requirements (Sponsored Spouse/Partner)
- Be in a genuine relationship — must provide evidence of the relationship (photos, communication records, joint assets, wedding documentation, etc.)
- Be admissible to Canada — no criminal inadmissibility, pass medical exam
- If outside Canada: apply as outland sponsorship (can continue living outside Canada during processing)
- If already in Canada with valid temporary status: may apply as inland sponsorship (can stay in Canada during processing)
Spousal Sponsorship Processing Time
Approximately 12 months for outland applications. Inland sponsorship (spouse already in Canada) can take 12–18 months. IRCC targets 12 months processing for spousal applications.
Option 4 — Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for PR
Canada's Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) allows Canadian citizens and PRs to sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residency. Unlike the Super Visa (which is temporary), the PGP grants permanent residency to the sponsored parents.
Important limitation: PGP intake is limited annually. IRCC opens sponsorship applications in a limited intake window — demand far exceeds available spots. In years when intake is open, eligible sponsors are selected through a pool or lottery system.
For parents who want to visit frequently while waiting for PGP, the Super Visa (see above) is the recommended interim option.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I visit my family in Canada without a visa if they are Canadian PR?
If your own passport nationality requires a TRV for Canada, you need to apply for one regardless of your family member's status. A family member in Canada — whether Canadian citizen, PR, or on a temporary permit — does not automatically allow you to enter Canada visa-free. You apply for a TRV and include their invitation letter and status proof.
How long can parents stay in Canada on a Super Visa?
Super Visa holders can stay in Canada for up to 5 years per entry. The Super Visa itself is valid for 10 years (multiple entry), so parents can come and go during that 10-year period, with each stay lasting up to 5 years. This makes it far more flexible than a regular TRV (6 months per entry).
How much income does my child need to sponsor me for a Super Visa?
Your Canadian child must show income meeting the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for their family size, which is set annually by IRCC. For 2025–2026, the MNI is approximately CAD $45,000/year for a family of 3 (sponsor, sponsor's spouse, and you). Check the current MNI table on the IRCC website.
How long does spousal sponsorship take in Canada?
IRCC targets approximately 12 months for spousal sponsorship applications (outland). Processing can be faster or slower depending on application completeness, country of origin, and background check requirements. Inland sponsorship (spouse already in Canada) takes 12–18 months. Your sponsored spouse can apply for an open work permit while their PR sponsorship is pending.
Can I sponsor my parents for Canadian PR?
Yes, through the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). However, PGP intake is highly limited — IRCC opens a sponsor application intake window with a cap, and demand far exceeds supply. In years when the PGP lottery opens, you must submit a sponsorship application quickly. Parents who cannot get into the PGP quickly can apply for a Super Visa in the meantime.
